International Women in Engineering Day

To mark International Women In Engineering Day on 23 June twelve year 8s visited the Institution of Mechanical Engineers where they enjoyed a day of activities and a careers fair.

The students were given the role of being civil engineers asked to plan and design a stadium. They took up the challenge and four of our students achieved runners up medals. Then they listened to talks by four female engineers: a climate scientist, a fire engineer, a space scientist and a digital engineer. The engineers discussed the worlds best inventions - our students were unanimous in their view that the binary system was the most important invention.

They then took part in a robotics workshop, programming a robot to walk around a path. Finally students were able to meet a range of engineers from varied areas. They finished the day realising that there are so many interesting, creative and diverse types of engineering that any young person can get into.
