6TH FORM END OF TERM LETTER - 23 JULY 2010

July 2010

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As the long and busy academic year draws to a close I would like to advise you of some important forthcoming matters.

AS results: AS results are available in school on Thursday August 19th. Students who have failed to meet the minimum standards required for progression to Year 13 (passes in two AS subjects at grade E or higher) should come into school for advice and guidance on Friday 20th or Monday 23rd August. The Sixth Form Team will be available to help. All other issues regarding AS results are dealt with at Year 13 Enrolment. GCSE results are published on Tuesday 24th August.

Year 13 Enrolment: Your son/daughter will have an individual interview at Year 13 Enrolment on Thursday 2nd September (surnames A-M from 9AM and surnames N-Z from 11.20) to confirm which courses s/he wishes to study in Year 13.  It is vital that all students attend this interview to ensure their place for the next year. Please note that these timings differ from the return arrangements for years 7 to 11 which are detailed in the Headteacher’s end of term letter.

University Application: Students have begun the process of university application. All students should by now have registered on UCAS Apply (the national on line system of application), undertaken the Stamford test and consulted the entry profiles for courses which are of interest.  In the UCAS assembly, the UCAS website and application process has been demonstrated to students and the Higher Education Convention on Friday 24th June explored key aspects of the application procedure and the university experience. Students have been given examples of applications to help them begin to think about their personal statements. Those interested in Oxbridge have participated in a specialist session led by a colleague from Cambridge University and early next term we will run a session with the Royal College of Surgeons for prospective Medical applicants.

Guidance for the application process can be accessed on Fronter, in the Higher Education room, and parents may wish to visit the UCAS website
www.ucas.com to receive a Parents’ Guide and quarterly bulletins. It is vital that students maintain attendance in form time in Year 13.  This will ensure that they receive ongoing, relevant information and support from their tutor in selecting courses and completing their application.

There are some changes to the Year Team. We welcome some very experienced colleagues to the team: Ms Jhugroo and Ms Bernstein will take over Ms Thwaites’ tutor group, as she will leave us at the end of term. We wish her well and thank her for her hard work with her tutor group. Mr Trimble has joined us as Deputy Head of Year 13, taking over from Ms Levitt, who will now develop her role in the Philosophy and Theology Department. I would like to thank for her work in helping and supporting the year group during their AS year.

With best wishes for a peaceful and restful break,
Yours faithfully,

Ms T Cronin
Assistant Headteacher
Head of Sixth Form
